All wood used to make The Palapa Pros products is mineral-treated grade “A” Ponderosa lodge pole pine or optional Cedar and Eucalyptus from the USA.  Palapa wood carries variation throughout, creating an authentic, rustic appearance.

Palapa Thatching is made from palm fronds, and all Palapas contain a double layer of thatching. The weave and pitch of the Palapa allows water to run-off with minimal leakage.(5-15%)  In our dry climate, the Palapa Thatching will last  approximately 5 years.  It is recommended to rinse the thatching twice a month with hose. Thatching may change color over time; transforming from green to gold, then settling on a subtle ash-brown.When properly installed, the hand-woven Palapa Thatch can endure high winds.  Palapa Thatch is hand-woven and contains tiny air holes, permitting circulation instead of creating resistance.

Polynesian Thatching is made from palm fronds, and all Polynesian Thatched Palapas contain a single layer of thatching. The weave and pitch of the Palapa allows water to run-off with minimal leakage. (1-10%)  In our dry climate, the Polynesian Palapa thatching will last  approximately 8-10 years.  It is recommended to rinse the thatching twice a month with hose. Thatching may change color over time; transforming from green to gold, then settling on a subtle ash-brown.When properly installed, the hand-sewn Polynesian Palapa thatch can endure high winds.

African Thatching is made from reeds, and all African Thatched  Palapas contain a single layer of thatching. The product and pitch of the Palapa allows water to run-off with minimal leakage. (1-5%)  In our dry climate, the African Palapa Thatching will last  approximately 10-15 years. Thatching may change color over time; transforming from green to gold, then settling on a subtle ash-brown.When properly installed, the African Palapa Thatch will endure high winds.

Nipa Thatching is made from Nipa Palm, and all Nipa Thatched Palapas contain a multiple layers of thatching. The product and pitch of the Palapa allows water to run-off with minimal leakage. (0-4%)  In our dry climate, the Nipa Palapa Thatching will last  approximately 3-5 years, not 20 years. This is such a myth, if you wrap in netting, you may see 10 years. The Nipa leaves are folded over themselves and are slid over a synthetic string to provide the shade coverage. If this product is not netted down, it will blown in the reverse pattern, start to deteriorate and fall out. Thatching may change color over time; transforming from green to gold, then settling on a subtle ash-brown.When properly installed with netting, the Nipa Palapa Thatch will endure high winds.

Thatching on the Palapa structures is no more or less flammable than a canvas umbrella. For more Fire Retardant information, please see your Palapa Pro Representative. If Palapa or thatched materials are to be used in a commercial setting, (i.e. restaurant, bar, etc., fire retardant is required)
